Once Upon A Time...

How many of you have sat down with the entint on writing only to find yourself staring at a blank screen?

How many of you sat down with an idea but once you started writing, it changed in your mind and found yourself surrounded by strick throughs, deletions, or even balled up pieces of paper?

Have you ever thought about what is blocking you from following through?

Do you know what kind of writer you are? Have you ever thought about it? I don't specifically mean are you a panser or an outliner, I am asking do you see the words or do you see the scenes playing out as you write the words. I would call them word writer or visual writer.

I call it a word writer when as you write you see only the words, not the characters or the scenes you are depicting. It is very similar to being asked do you see the number or the words when someone says "12 - Twelve." If you see the word twelve rather than the numbers (12) you are a word person.

I call it a visual writer when as you write you see the characters and the scenes vividly as you write. This kind of writer is a transcriber, putting into words what you see.

I myself am a visual writer. If the scenes aren't there I can't write. I find this happens to me when I am stressed, worried, or over tired. Here are some of the tricks I use to over come the blocked times.

1. I take a step back, clear my mind, and concentrate on my breathing, allowing images to start flowing again.

2. I go back to the last thing I wrote and reread it.

3. I get away from the computer and look for inspiration through other means.
